Prepare before seeking proposals

Commercial installations can involve ownership, grid and operating issues beyond those of a home. Property managers and business owners can gather the following information before seeking proposals.

1. Roof ownership and leases

If you do not own the building outright, establish the landlord's position on roof alterations. Clarify who is responsible for repairs and maintenance, and ask how a proposed agreement relates to the length of your lease.

2. Usage, meter data and grid export

Half-hourly meter data, when available, can help explain when your business uses electricity. Compare proposed generation with operating hours and any limits on export to the grid. Confirm the supply and connection arrangements for the site.

3. Structure and access

Ask a suitably qualified professional to assess roof condition, loading, access and wind uplift. Older or fragile roofs may require additional precautions. Consider how survey, installation and maintenance access would work around site operations.
